To: WHOEVER FORMS OUR NEXT GOVERNMENT
INCREASE INVESTMENT IN MENTAL HEALTH - TO 11% OF OUR TOTAL HEALTH BUDGET
For good health, we all need access to mental health service. It's our 'MENTAL WEALTH' This means; reduce wait times, increase employment in these direct services and provide care in local communities. Experts had advised governments that a much greater proportion toward mental health is required including severe mental disorders. We need at least 11% of the total health care budget to be dedicated toward mental health services!
Why is this important?
Neglecting mental health helps no one!
Why Increase investment in mental health to 11% of our total health care budget?
All families would benefit with better access to mental health services - both for our neighbours and for ourselves. No one is immune to mental illness!
In 2022 mental health receives ONLY 7% of funds directed to health services, per figures from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
Back in 2016, the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) recommended 9% of the health budget.
Expert research from the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) advised greater investment of 9% was required, in 2017.
The Royal Society of Canada recommended "that governments increase funding for mental health and substance use services TO AT LEAST 12% of the health services budget, to respond to the longstanding unmet need" (2020)
England invests 13% while France invests 15% in mental health, as a percentage of its health budget. (CIHI 2019)
Government must conduct a thorough Audit tracking where our tax money is going. We need solid value from our mental health services. It's your tax dollars at work.
You will agree - access to mental health services - when you need it - that's what each family deserves!
