Petition Against the Construction Project at 4875 Dundas St. West
We, the residents of Barclay Terrace, strongly oppose the proposed construction project at 4875 Dundas St. West. This development poses significant and unacceptable impacts on our community, including:
- Evictions: Many residents will face displacement from their homes, causing undue stress and hardship.
- Prolonged Construction: The project will result in years of disruptive construction and noise, severely affecting our quality of life.
- Pollution and Environmental Concerns: The construction will significantly increase pollution levels in our neighborhood, affecting air quality and contributing to health issues for residents. Additionally, the lack of green spaces to absorb rainwater will exacerbate rain runoff problems, potentially leading to flooding and further environmental degradation.
- Infrastructure Strain and Over Saturation: The area is already overwhelmed with numerous construction projects, both underway and planned. This over saturation is causing significant noise, pollution, and traffic issues, and is straining our existing water and electricity infrastructure, leading to frequent disruptions.
- Safety Concerns: The increased construction activity poses a significant safety risk for our children walking to and from Islington Junior Middle School, which is surrounded by construction sites.
- Lack of Services and Infrastructure: There is a severe lack of services, schools, and infrastructure to support the growth from all these projects, which will negatively impact the quality of life for current and future residents.
- Insufficient Parking: The proposed development does not provide adequate parking for both tenants and guests, which will create overflow problems and exacerbate parking issues in the area.
- Building Size: The size of the building is too large compared to the land it sits on. The height should be aligned with surrounding buildings to maintain the character of the neighborhood.
- Need for Affordable Housing: There is a pressing need for affordable housing in our city. We are concerned that, like many other developments, this project may focus on high-end units, which do not address the housing needs of the broader community.
We urge the City Planning Office, Councillor Morley’s Office, and the Developer to reconsider and halt this development to protect our Village of Islington community and its environment.
Why is this important?
The proposed construction project at 4875 Dundas St. West poses a significant threat to the Village of Islington, a community cherished for its unique character and close-knit atmosphere. This development risks displacing long-term residents, disrupting the social fabric that makes our neighborhood special. The prolonged construction period will bring years of noise, pollution, and traffic congestion, severely impacting the quality of life for all residents. Additionally, the environmental impact of increased pollution and inadequate green spaces will degrade our neighborhood, leading to potential health issues and exacerbating flooding risks.
Our existing infrastructure is already under considerable strain, and the addition of this project will only worsen issues with water, electricity, and traffic, causing frequent disruptions. The safety of our children and pedestrians is also at risk due to the increased construction activity around schools and residential areas. Furthermore, the lack of sufficient services, schools, and infrastructure to support the influx of new residents will negatively impact the quality of life for both current and future residents.
The proposed building’s size is out of scale with the surrounding neighborhood, threatening the character and aesthetic of our community. There is also a pressing need for affordable housing in our city, and we are concerned that this project may not address this need, potentially focusing on high-end units instead.
Understanding these impacts highlights the importance of carefully considering the future development of our neighborhood to ensure it remains a vibrant and sustainable place for all residents.
