Ford: Don’t rob Ontario workers of labour fairness
Don’t cancel the $15 minimum wage
Why is this important?
Doug Ford just confirmed our worst fears - he's repealing the $15 minimum wage, and scrapping labour condition, including paid sick days, equal pay, and paid leave for domestic violence. [1] The fight for a minimum wage that people can actually live on and fair working conditions has taken years of sweat, tears and diligent organizing. Groups like $15 and Fairness and every day people who believe no one deserves the indignity of living in poverty came together to achieve this historic legislative victory.
And Ford is callously ripping it all up. [2]
Let’s be clear: this is a shameless attack on low-wage earners. Ford’s move to scrap the $15 minimum wage will rob the lowest-income people in Ontario of $2,000 a year. [3] And for no good reason - when Alberta implemented a $15 minimum wage, the economy improved. [4]
But we won before, and we can win again.
But we can’t let this repeal go unchecked. If we don’t push back with an immediate, massive and decisive show of opposition, there's no chance he'll back down. But if we let him know just how unpopular this decision is, starting with a massive petition, we could force him to backtrack.
The first reading was on October 22. Will you add your name to help make this the biggest petition Ford has ever seen before the bill's next reading?
