CALL FOR IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE IN WAKE OF INVOKING OF UN COUNCIL ARTICLE 99

Dear Mayor Eric Woodward,

As your constituent, I am deeply troubled by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The people in Gaza continue to face worsening conditions as bombing only intensifies with each passing day. The current situation is untenable, and it is imperative that we advocate for a ceasefire to protect innocent lives on both sides of this conflict.
Today the UN Council invoked Article 99 for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. This is unprecedented and has never happened in history before. It is the equivalent of pressing the “panic button” - the humanitarian crisis has reached catastrophic proportions.

The Canadian government has expressed support for a humanitarian ceasefire. We must immediately alleviate the suffering of millions in Gaza. Recent days in Gaza have been marked by the most devastating violence yet, resulting in a higher death toll and the destruction of critical infrastructure. Hospitals are on the verge of collapse, and people have no safe haven as bombs continue to fall.

The indiscriminate nature of the ongoing bombings not only exacerbates human suffering but also poses significant challenges to the safe delivery of aid. Only through a ceasefire can aid be delivered safely. As of December 5th, the UN has reported that more than 21000 people have been killed in Gaza, with over 40% of them being children. This statistic underscores the urgency of the situation.

As Canadians, we have a moral obligation to stand up for human rights and dignity on the international stage. I implore you to use your position to call on the Canadian government to take immediate action in advocating for a ceasefire to end this violence.

I want to emphasize that I will be exercising my voting rights based on your actions on this matter. It is crucial that we collaborate as an international community to ensure that vital aid reaches those in desperate need, and it is imperative that we bring this crisis to a swift conclusion.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and for representing the values of compassion and justice that Canadians hold dear.

Sincerely,
Tracey Meneely

Why is this important?

We must uphold the lasting values and traditions of Canada being a peace keeping country. Palestinians face daily human rights abuses such as apartheid systems, poverty, food and water shortages, arrests and detention of children who are brought before military courts. Gaza is currently the most dangerous place in the world to be a child, with bombardments increasing daily on civilian homes and infrastructures. We must stop this increasing humanitarian crisis and protect the lives of innocent civilians, namely children.
