Breaking up with Fossil Fools: RBC

Stand in Solidarity with Indigenous Land Defenders Resisting Projects Funded by RBC

When: Saturday April 6, 2024

The Royal Bank of Canada’s Annual General Meeting for shareholders will be happening April 11. At last year’s Annual General Meeting of the Royal Bank of Canada, Wet’suwet’en and other Indigenous and Black Land Defenders denounced RBC for funding violence and destruction in their communities. Outside the meeting, our communities rallied in support, drawing thousands of participants.

This year, we will stand in solidarity once again with a delegation of Indigenous representatives from Nations across Turtle Island and around the world. RBC is complicit in human rights abuses and genocide at home and around the world. Their investments in the Coastal GasLink pipeline violate Wet’suwet’en rights and lead to militarized RCMP violence and a multiyear campaign of surveillance, harassment, and brutality. Their investments in tar sands extraction (Imperial Oil, TransMountain Expansion) violate Indigenous rights, cause devastating health impacts, and have led to ecocide. Their investments in weapons and surveillance technology advance the genocide in Palestine, where more than 30,000 people, including over 10,000 children, have lost their lives since October. They profit from land theft, war, ecocide and genocide.

The Annual General Meeting is an important moment for us to make sure the voices of Land Defenders are heard, loud and clear, both inside the meeting and in news coverage. We need you and your community to make this happen. We need people in 50 communities across so-called Canada to host solidarity actions. This is the best way to amplify the message of the Indigenous delegation and to make sure that message can’t be ignored.
