Repeal Bill 62

Dear Premier Philippe Couillard,
According to Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canadians have four fundamental freedoms. The first on the list is freedom of conscience and religion. Bill 62 clearly violates that right.

Therefore I urge you to reconsider and repeal Bill 62.

Why is this important?

Some Muslim women are being asked to choose between following the dictates of their religion and accessing government services. If they cannot use public transit, they may not be able to work, shop, pick up their children from school, or visit a doctor. This is seriously discriminatory.

The government should not be legislating what people can and cannot wear. My grandparents were forced to wear the Star of David. We know where that led.

Philippe Couillard said, "A covered face isn't only about religion. You speak to me. I speak to you. I see your face. You see mine. It's part of communications." But we do not need to see someone's face to communicate. We write letters, send emails, post on the Internet, speak on the phone. We communicate without seeing each others faces. Couillard's justification for the bill is thinly veiled bigotry.

Bigotry has no place in Canada.
